Chemical tank barges transporting most chemicals produced or
handled by local petrochemical refineries are sent to Carotex, Inc. to clean
for cargo change, for gas freeing for repairs, or for inspection by USCG or
other entities. Most topside repairs
can be handled at our facility and some other minor repairs. We utilize the local Marine Chemist to
inspect barges for hot work and have employees trained as competent persons to
handle other inspections. We have a
TCEQ permitted water treatment facility that insures that wastewater created in
the process is handled in an environmentally safe way. This saves our customers money and time.
The cleaning department consists of two crews of about 6-8
men so that the facility while not being the largest is usually available 7
days per week and 24 hours per day. Mr.
Creig Carter supervises the cleaning docks and has more than 20 years experience in the barge
cleaning service.
The repair department has Mr. Jimmy Ortego and his crew of 3
welder/laborers. Jimmy is recognized in
the industry as a top-notch barge man who maintains a good relationship with
USCG.

Carotex, Inc. began operations in April 1984 at the old
Rainbow Shipyard site cleaning barges and doing minor topside repairs. After regulations on barge cleaning
tightened Carotex soon became the only barge cleaning operation between
Louisiana and Houston. With the
addition of Mr. Ortego, handling USCG inspections etc. became a regular
service. We also provide spill kits and
inspections for the local docks.
